Advanced Management for Less: The VigorFly210 and Software Upgrade

As mentioned previously, DrayTek had recently released new firmware for the VigorFly210 to maximize its capabilities as a device for small and remote office users. Quality of Service is supported and enhances both a network and its equipment, the firmware providing traditional QoS functionality, as well as APP QoS and IP bandwidth and session limitations- meaning internet and network allocation can be managed according to individual users, devices and programs, helping increase a system’s full potential. VoIP QoS is also supported, managing inbound and outbound packets as well as allowing users to view usage statistics.

The VigorFly210 has also been designed with the needs of small businesses and remote offices in mind. The device can be set up quickly and easily, allowing instant internet access when used with a 3G or 4G mobile connection to maintain business operations.

A VPN tunnel also provides greater security to business communication and corporate applications with communication is further enhanced by the prioritization of VoIP packets, guaranteeing voice call quality. Extensive management tools, a focus on business communication and competitive pricing make the VigorFly210 an excellent choice for both the home and small business users.

VPN Load Balancing with DrayTek Routers

VPN Load balancing allows numerous VPN connections to exist between two sites, and their configuration over multiple WAN connections. This is used to provide both a larger capacity network pipe between the two sites as well as support redundancy should one of the WAN connections fail.

VPN load balancing is a process involving the combination of two individual VPN connections as a single VPN trunk. VPN traffic is then transmitted over both links, with each individual VPN link in the trunk connection determined by the Real Time Bandwidth of each link, which shares the VPN traffic load.

This is a useful feature when a site’s ADSL connection limits network speed. For example, a VPN load balanced connection can be established between head and remote offices over two ADSL links, which effectively doubles the link capacity between the two sites.

The two WAN connections may also come from separate ISP’s,  meaning a VPN connection can be maintained over a second WAN connection should one of the providers fail.

Some devices, such as the Vigor3200 and the Vigor3300 can use 4 WAN connections to create a much larger VPN trunk between two interconnected sites, as outlined below. In the diagram, two VPN trunks are established (one for each LAN subnet) and then combined into one large VPN trunk.

Routers supporting VPN load balancing are the Vigor2850, 2930, 2955, 3200, 3300 and the eagerly awaited Vigor3900 and Vigor2960 series routers.

DrayTek Announces the new VigorFly210

DrayTek has recently announced the release of the new IPv6 ready VigorFly210 compact broadband router.

The VigorFly 210 is an IPv6 compact broadband router with 802.11n WLAN capability. Its Ethernet WAN port can connect to any of VDSL/VDSL2/GPON/G.SHDSL/ADSL2+/ADSL/cable WAN outputs.

The high NAT throughput rate of VigorFly 210 allows it to handle time-critical streaming at ease, so your family and friends can enjoy multimedia applications via the built-in Ethernet switch. And if you are out of the ADSL range, you can plug a 3G/4G USB modem to the USB port and get Internet access instantly.

The built-in 802.11n WLAN AP with two antennas provides you with fast and reliable WLAN connectivity. The WMM (WiFi Multimedia) function allows you to send or receive high speed multimedia traffic easily.

VigorFly 210 offers some extra features that are not normally provided on other similarly priced products. One of these is the ability to set up three separate virtual access points, each one with its own SSID and specific security parameters. In this way for example, it’s possible to create temporary profiles for the access of guests, without the need to use your regular access network’s password. A fourth SSID can be activated by enabling the Universal Repeater mode, making VigorFly 210 to work as a WDS (Wireless Distributed System).

VigorFly 210 provides enhanced security protection and features for your network, including Commtouch GlobalView Web Content Filter, DoS/DDoS attack prevention, SPI, Port-redirection, open port, and MAC address filter. All these features strengthen the security inside and outside your network.

For places where there’s no ADSL or cable Internet access and only 3G/4G mobile broadband is available, you can connect your 3G/4G modem onto the VigorFly 210 and instantly, other PC and devices can share the Internet access. Better still, it has all the key features that DrayTek’s Vigor routers are family about.

On the pipeline is a planned firmware enhancement to include one VPN tunnel for remote access as well as Bandwidth Management features including:

  • APP QoS: Prioritize Packet of VoIP, Video Streaming, IM, P2P
  • Bandwidth/Session Limitation

DrayTek VigorAP 800 Wireless Access Point Video

DrayTek Australia is pleased to introduce the VigorAP 800 Wireless Access Point.

This video will provide details of the features the VigorAP 800

VigorAP 700 Now Available in Australia

With the iPhone/iPAD, Android phones, tablets, and other mobile devices being used everywhere, access from these devices to WLAN (wireless local area network) has meant that WLAN accessibility at work, public places and home is now a necessity, and where WLAN is existent, people are asking for extended range and higher security.

To help quench the thirst, DrayTek has produced a low cost alternative to the feature rich VigorAP 800. The VigorAP 700 is ideal if you do not require all the advanced features of VigorAP 800, but require reliable and secure WLANs.

Some of the outstanding features of The VigorAP 700 are:

  • Latest 802.11n draft with 802.11b/g compatibility workable with your legacy wireless devices.
  • Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM) to green your IT via power saving and traffic-optimized capabilities.
  • Multiple SSID (Up to 4 SSID) and Virtual LAN for guest wireless access to the Internet.
  • AP-Client mode as a destination reinforcing your converge via the existing wireless network.
  • WDS (Wireless Distribution System) easily extending your network through Point-to-Point /Multi-Point Bridge and Universal Repeater Mode.
  • Built-in RADIUS Server for the security enhancement of your wireless network.
  • Industry level security standards including 802.11i (WPA2).

The WMM (Wi-Fi Multi Media) standard defines QoS (Quality of Service) in Wi-Fi networks and is a precursor to the upcoming IEEE 802.11e WLAN QoS draft standard that is designed to prioritize applications, e.g. audio, video and voice, transmitted over Wi-Fi and thus improve the network performance.

The Multiple SSID and the Virtual LAN capabilities mean that you can divide the VigorAP 700 into several virtual APs, and assign policies and functions for each SSID to support different applications. For example, visitors to businesses or the public in hotels, shopping malls or restaurants can be given wireless access to the Internet, but are barred from internal data servers.

The RADIUS server allows you to store and manage user names and password centrally and control access to your network easily and securely.

For larger places such as shopping malls, the WDS (Wireless Distribution System) makes it easy to switch between point-to-point and point-to-multi point, or bridging and repeater modes. This means that the signal ranges and network capacities can be easily extended. If required, the detachable antennas on the VigorAP 700 can also be swapped with higher gain or directional ones.

Big Improvements for Vigor2920 With Latest Firmware Update

Yes, it’s another firmware update story… but expect plenty more because those clever engineers at DrayTek are always working to enhance product functionality and keep existing units as up-to-date as possible.  DrayTek Vigor2920 Version 3.3.7 firmware has recently been deployed with some very significant improvements for the Dual WAN broadband router series.

Firstly, there is the VPN Backup for VPN TRUNK Management. This mechanism allows users to set multiple VPN tunnels as backup tunnels. In the event of failure of one tunnel, VPN backup can automatically connect another tunnel to the remote VPN server, so you will never have to worry about your VPN dropping out. The VPN backup feature also applies to all VPN types – PPTP, L2TP, L2TP over IPSec, Gre over IPSec or IPSec.

Also with Version 3.3.7, Vigor2920 series now supports multiple subnets. The significance of this is that through creating multiple subnets for different departments, it will allow users to allocate network functions and resources between workgroups more easily. Administrators will now have greater control than ever to plan, manage, and monitor network usage to ensure an efficient and secure network.

And as I reported in my last post, owing to this latest firmware update, Vigor2920 series is now backed by DrayTek’s Smart Monitor (Windows and Linux compatible) traffic monitoring software. From logging network issues to recording email or IM chat exchanges via the router, Smart Monitor will effectively capture and analyse important network information, and present its findings to Network Administrators via an interface that is easy to interpret and enables Administrators to quickly seek out specific information to identify areas of inefficiency. Smart Monitor can oversee after up to 30 users on the Vigor2920 series.

These few improvements are among many with this firmware update. For more information on firmware update Version 3.3.7 for Vigor2920 series, you can download the release notes here. For an inside look of this latest version, try out the live web demo.

The Vigor2920 is a Dual WAN broadband router with one Ethernet WAN and one Gigabit WAN port to connect to DSL/Cable/VDSL2 modem or Ethernet FTTx device (up to 150 Mbps), with support for Load Balance and Fail-Over across both WANs. Its advanced features include secure network management (Firewall & CSM), bandwidth management (QoS, Session Limitation & Bandwidth Control), remote data access (VPN), making this router ideal for SOHO and business users.
