Vigor2830Vn – Killer Product Says PC Mag Greece

DrayTek’s Vigor2830Vn ADSL2/2+ router has recently earned DrayTek another notch on its belt. In the July 2011 of PC Magazine Greece, the Vigor2830Vn was deemed a ‘Killer Product’ in an editor’s review. They especially loved its abundance of features, Gigabit interfaces, 3G USB support and wireless ‘n’ functions.

Here is a translated excerpt of the article:

“DrayTek is a manufacturer of networking solutions with great experience and also a wide range of products. Vigor2830Vn ADSL modem/router is equipped with plenty of features, which make it fully capable to meet the needs of even high demanding business environments. The first interesting feature to notice is that all its four Ethernet ports are Gigabit. Furthermore, you will find one WAN port, available for connection with a second network, which is also Gigabit. Nevertheless, to keep you constantly “online”, Vigor2830Vn integrates a USB port where you can connect any 3G USB modem that can offer access to the 3G network and then to the Internet. One of its sophisticated characteristics is that Vigor2830Vn provides the user with the ability to realize up to three simultaneous WAN connections, something which will be greatly appreciated by many network administrators. Moreover, it supports the impressive number of 50,000 NAT sessions, when the preceding model (Vigor 2820Vn) supports up to 15,000 NAT sessions. Vigor 2830Vn is also a powerful, wireless-N compatible router. It integrates three antennas, while on its front display you will find a double-function switch, which is used to activate and de-activate the Wi-Fi option, but also to initiate the WPS procedure for ensuring easy clients’ connection. Last but not least, its integrated management software allows you to define Internet access policies based on login & limits – either time or access restrictive – for specific sites.”

With the latest Vigor2830 series, DrayTek has taken their proven recipe for the award-winning Vigor2820 series and taken it to a whole new level. The highly-refined Vigor2830 series comprising of Vigor2830, Vigor2830n (wireless) and Vigor2830Vn (wireless and VoIP), is embedded with one ADSL2/2+ WAN port, one Gigabit Ethernet WAN port and one USB port for 3.5G USB modem.

Vigor2110n a Hit with NetCHEIF Mag

Sometimes when people say “you pay for what you get”, they may not be talking about getting good value. BUT when someone says about your product, “You pay for what you get… For its price, you get superior wireless performance, a wealth of features and many configuration possibilities”, you pretty safely take that as a compliment.

And that’s exactly what NetCHEIF Israel’s Lavi Shiffman had to say about our Vigor2110n. He also said “Vigor2110n can as well fit those advanced home users, who are searching for such advanced features” See the rest of the review here.

Vigor2110n is a 4 port 802.11n wireless router perfect for SOHO users and is complete with secure network management (Firewall & CSM), bandwidth management (QoS, Session Limitation & Bandwidth Control), remote data access (VPN) and advanced wireless technology (IEEE 802.11n standard WLAN).

Data + Communications = VigorIPPBX

1. Convergence of Networking and Telephony

Like cars and trains in transportation, networking and telephony in communication are two very distinctive fields, in that each of them has its own set of standards, protocols, and products that evolve through the developmental generations.

It is only recently, with the advancement of IP and digital technology, that the analogue based PSTN has given way to VoIP. Similarly, the IP based PBX (Private Branch Exchange) is taking over traditional PABX (Private Analogue Branch Exchange) business telephone systems.

Up until now, implementing a PBX system to manage the telephony requirements for businesses can be a nightmare, especially without the right equipment. The true legacy of the legacy PBX system is one of wiring complications with analogue lines, messy extension configurations, and difficulties supporting VoIP arrangements. In addition, there are a multitude of devices, products to be connected and configured to work together. Last but not the least, staff need to be trained to make calls based on the hardware systems, but not the way they are accustomed to.

In response to these developments, DrayTek has produced VigorIPPBX 2820, which combines comprehensive IPPBX functions with the award-winning Dual WAN Security router, Vigor2820 series routers.

The perfect marriage of a flexible and easy to manage/use IPPBX with a reliable Dual WAN, the full featured DrayTek router means:

  • Improved capacity to deliver better services.
  • Flexible and cost effective investment on communication infrastructure.
  • Secure and reliable data and telephony networks to ensure zero interruption to business activities.

2. The key PBX features of VigorIPPBX 2820

  • It allows you to take control of your telephony system with ease, allowing full flexibility in designing a reliable and effective telephone system, with hardware configuration and operational rules that fit your company or organization.
  • It reduces telephony call charges and support expenses. Through SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) the inbound and outbound calls between the internal and external callers can be routed over the SIP network, bypassing the costly and cluttered connections of PSTN.
  • It reduces the expenses associated with the convergence of voice and data systems. The costs to connect the data networks and the telephony separately are spared.
  • It can host up to 50 extensions, allowing all registered IP phones in the LAN or remote sites around the world to have unlimited free calls through Internet, thus improving the internal communications.
  • It supports IP phones, Softphones (for PC/NB/Smartphones), ATA devices (optional, e.g. VigorATA24), and analogue telephones (including DECT phones), making the connectivity of the PBX network simple and flexible.
  • It supports full PBX functions, such as Auto Attendance, Call Forward/Parking/Barring, Digit Map, Hunt Group, Voice Mail to Emails, and so on.
  • It has a browser-based configuration menu, and user-friendly interfaces with enhanced accessibility to features. It also has the ability to upgrade current firmware locally and remotely.
  • It supports Caller Detail Records. This can list caller records for operation review purposes such as relationship-building with customers.

3. The key router features of VigorIPPBX 2820

Dual WAN / Bandwidth Management

In addition to the primary ADSL interface, the VigorIPPBX 2820 has a second WAN port to connect a second xDSL modem or any other Ethernet-based Internet feed, including xDSL, Cable, or Satellite, and a USB port to connect a 3G Mobile Broadband for as backup Internet access.

With dual WAN, not only that you will have consistently high voice quality over the phone with stable connectivity, you won’t ever have to worry about any downtime from your ITSP’s system affecting your operations.

To make good use of the Dual WAN capacity, you will have the freedom to setup the WANs to work in any of Failover, Load Balance or Load Sharing modes. The Failover mode means that in the event of an unexpected disturbance to the network, continuity of business and disaster recovery is guaranteed. You also have the freedom to share the broadband capacities provided by the dual WANs.

The QoS feature means that the voice data packets will take the first priorities to ensure call quality at all times.

Firewall

VigorIPPBX 2820′s flexible object-based firewall secures your network with DoS/DDoS prevention and URL/Web content filters, protecting your network from exterior threats whilst maintaining control from within.

The SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) firewall allows inspection of data packets in the deeper fields to ensure no undue bugs are passed in or out of the network.

You can customize object policies with utmost flexibility, and reuse or recombine them as required.

Furthermore, the all powerful CSM of (Content Security Management) of VigorIPPBX 2820 allows network administrators to set up policies for users with extreme ease. These cover IM (e.g. MSN), Web applications, P2P (e.g. BitTorrent), URL filter, and so on. There is also a Web Content Filter, powered by Commtouch, which allows the blocking/passing of undesirable web pages by simply ticking or un-ticking the categories (e.g. Child Protection, Gambling) you wish to prohibit.

Virtual Private Network

VPN has been the leading feature in the success of DrayTek routers since the early days. Now, with the hardware-based VPN platform and hardware encryption systems AES/DES/3DS, VigorIPPBX 2820 supports all major protocols (such as IPSec/PPTP/L2TP) for up to 32 VPN tunnels. Additional features include:

  • DHCP over IPSec
  • Dead Peer Detection (DPD)
  • Mobile One-Time Password
  • NAT-Traversal (NAT-T)

Wireless LAN (for VigorIPPBX 2820n only)

DrayTek’s Wireless LAN features cover all the key aspects of IEEE 802.11n standards in terms of Security/Access Control, plus extra functions:

  • Wireless LAN Isolation
  • Wireless SSID Isolation
  • Wireless Rate Control
  • WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup)
  • WDS (Wireless Distribution System)
  • WMM (Wi-Fi Multimedia)
  • Access Point Discovery
  • Wireless Station List

With the Wireless LAN capability, you can extend all the router and IPPBX features to users in your vicinity. For example, you can share your omni-present 3G mobile broadband network with others’ devices in the premises instantly.

USB Port

VigorIPPBX 2820 is equipped with a USB port that supports 3G Mobile Broadband, FTP protocol and Printer Servers.

For example, a hard drive flash-based USB storage device connected to VigorIPPBX 2820 acts as a FTP (File Transfer Protocol) server, and users can access its contents with any FTP client from LAN or WAN. This means you can download files, e.g. retrieve presentation files, when you are out and about, around the clock.

Smart Monitor – It’s a bit late… but not too late… at all…

For years, DrayTek routers come with a free utility, Syslog, which provides a log of network traffic and sorts it into traffic types: Firewall, DoS, VPN, User Access, WAN, Call, …, etc. These logs help the users to analyse the traffic flowing through the router in details. They can also record and pass the Syslog files to you (the network administrator) or our technical support for analysis and troubleshooting of the network conditions.

If you haven’t seen a page of Syslog, here is one:

While Syslog has been popular for the great work it is designed to do, many users have been asking us questions such as these:
• Can I monitor the network usage of each PC or NB (i.e., internal IP address) in my network?
• Can I get a list of bandwidth usages for each person (so I can split the broadband costs accordingly)?
• Can I record what my kids are doing when they are using the computers in their rooms?
• Can I tell what are the websites that our employees are accessing?
• Can I tell what are the most downloaded FTP files in my FTP server?
• Etc.

For years we have to say that these functions are not for routers that cost only a few hundreds, such as DrayTek’s, and not those costing thousands of dollars. Fortunately, all these ramblings must’ve been overheard by DrayTek, and they have come up with yet another great tool: Smart Monitor.

Smart Monitor provides a log of data packets that pass through the router, and tabulates the protocols, the volumes (in MB), content (email, IM, P2P, etc.), etc. against the internal IP addresses (the PCs).

The protocols covered include: FTP, email, http, IM, telnet, P2P, SIP, etc., as shown in this page:

Installed in a server in the local network, Smart Monitor collects data through a Mirror Port connection from the router to the server. It collects the traffic packets data, analyses and group them into individual reports. Then you can access these reports via a Web browser.

The reports of Smart Monitor are good tools for analysing and troubleshooting of network conditions. You (the network administrator) can derive the network conditions easily with the logged data, figure out what’s working and what’s not, double check certain network traffic issues at will, and tell your boss in no time that you’ve found the trouble spot.

Armed with reports of network usages for various type of data traffic, you will also be able to design and plan the network to meet the organisational requirements on time.

In this day and age, it’s a taboo for employers to ignore the privacy of the employees – for good reasons. However, it’s another matter completely, for the employers to demand proper behaviour and correct use of company properties to do work as assigned. Work, one would argue, doesn’t include non-stop instant messaging, browsing of improper (naughty) web-pages, P2P downloading on the work network, …, etc.

With Smart Monitor installed, an employer can inform the staff that their uses of the network are recorded for the purpose of productivity management (wow!), and show them the reports that include the Top 10 ranking of IM, HTTP, FTP, P2P, …, etc.

This practice will have a similar effect as speed cameras on the roads – like the drivers who may or may not like the idea of being watched, the employees will give heed to the rules, resulting in self regulated network usage and behaviour, and improvement in staff productivity.

It will also be advisable to have a disclaimer and acceptance form like this one: http://www.draytek.com/user/SupportLiveDemoDetail.php?ID=56

In the home scenarios, parents will be better informed of the kids’ activities, and together with DrayTek’s firewall functions, you (the parents) will be able to sleep (or go to work) with peace of mind knowing that the kids can enjoy activities on the safer and healthier parts of the Internet. Whether you want to inform the kids or not about the Smart Monitor, well, that’s another parenting topic.

What’s the price for Smart Monitor? It’s FREE. You can download Smart Monitor from: http://www.draytek.com/user/SupportDLUtility.php , if you or your customers are proud owners of one or more of the following models:
Vigor2820 Series : Up to 30 PC’
Vigor2950 Series : Up to 100 PCs
Vigor3300 Series : Up to 100PCs
VigorPro 5510 series : Up to 150 PCs

More details are in here: http://www.draytek.com/user/PdInfoDetail.php?Id=92#PdInfo. (Note: Currently Smart Monitor supports wired connections only.)
