DrayTek Australia is pleased to introduce the video “VPN Load Balancing with DrayTek Routers”

VPN Load balancing allows numerous VPN connections to exist between two sites, and their configuration over multiple WAN connections. This is used to provide both a larger capacity network pipe between the two sites as well as support redundancy should one of the WAN connections fail.

VPN load balancing is a process involving the combination of two individual VPN connections as a single VPN trunk. VPN traffic is then transmitted over both links, with each individual VPN link in the trunk connection determined by the Real Time Bandwidth of each link, which shares the VPN traffic load.

This is a useful feature when a site’s ADSL connection limits network speed. For example, a VPN load balanced connection can be established between head and remote offices over two ADSL links, which effectively doubles the link capacity between the two sites.
The two WAN connections may also come from separate ISP’s, meaning a VPN connection can be maintained over a second WAN connection should one of the providers fail.

As always, Draytek are eager to help users get the most from their DrayTek devices and stay up to date with the constantly changing technological environment. Maintaining this attitude, DrayTek have just released more firmware for its products. The update has given the devices a few additional features, including an LDAP search request and simple authentication for Microsoft Active Directory (MAD). This means users logging into the remote network can be authenticated by either using LDAP, by querying a Radius server, or using a local database on the router.

The new firmware also supports a 2048-bit private key for local certificate which is used as part of the X-509 certificate generation. It is used for the authentication of those using VPN connections and provides a higher level of encryption than the previous firmware.

Furthermore, the firmware has improved upon some of the existing series’ features, supporting 64-bit Windows to allow SSL Tunnel, and now also supports Vista/Win7/Win2008 as well as full screen capabilities for SSL RDP applications. DrayTek have also added improved the TR-069 parameters to increase the extent to which the device can be configured using the ACS-SI, as well as enhancing the router’s firewall security settings by developing the IMP2P signature under CSM.

Finally, some small issues users have had with the devices have been fixed, most importantly improving compatibility with Cisco routers and further improving their VPN load-balancing abilities

This new firmware can be downloaded at http://www.draytek.com/user/SupportDownloads.php#. If you have any further questions about the upgrade or Draytek equipment, please contact support@draytek.com.au.

VigorFly210’s 1.2.0 version firmware gives the VigorFly210 extensive management capabilities that are typically only available on more expensive routers.

The most significant part of the update is the addition of numerous forms of QoS support to the VigorFly210. Both traditional and APP quality of service management features allow the extensive prioritization of network traffic for specific applications. The diagnostic feature allows you to monitor network usage, creating a traffic graph which enables system analysis.

The latest firmware also provides QoS specifically for VoIP operations; ensuring priority is given to VOIP traffic, preventing poor quality or failure resulting from high traffic within the network. Additionally, the new firmware supports both IP bandwidth and session limitation to ensure the network is used fairly and appropriately. Despite these broad management features, should the WAN connection still drop out the router will reboot itself and send an SMS notification to administrators to alert them of the issue. Users can thus respond to problems quickly and maintain network connectivity.

New firmware (version 3.5.7) for the Vigor IPPBX 2820 has just been released. It adds a number of new features as well as a few bug fixes.

New features include:

- ‘Auto Attendant’ mechanism. This includes additional menu options and new call management capabilities.

- Call queuing capabilities for Hunt groups. This allows incoming calls to be placed in a queue if all hunt group extensions are busy. This is vital during peak operation hours and allows customer’s calls to be placed on hold rather than go unanswered.

- Support custom trunk (i.e. define an extension as a trunk). This expands the number of PSTN/ISDN trunks available to the IPPBX. For example, get extra PSTN/ISDN trunks from a Vigor3300V+ and then register at VigorIPPBX.The extension/trunk numbers are configured at the trunk line setting section in the WUI. These custom trunks are capable of both receiving and making calls.

- Trunk simultaneous call number limitation. Time budgeting for SIP, ISDN and PTSN trunks can minimize inappropriate phone use. The maximum number of incoming and/or outgoing calls per trunk can be limited or increased as necessary, assisting in ensuring the suitable use of business property and allow usage to fluctuate according to expected traffic.

- Support for Vigor Phone 300 auto provision. The VigorPhone300 has now been added to the auto-provision function. The two devices work together seamlessly saving installation time and effort.

The firmware is now available for download from the DrayTek Australia website: http://www.draytek.com.au/downloads.php?type=VigorIPPBX2820

As mentioned previously, DrayTek had recently released new firmware for the VigorFly210 to maximize its capabilities as a device for small and remote office users. Quality of Service is supported and enhances both a network and its equipment, the firmware providing traditional QoS functionality, as well as APP QoS and IP bandwidth and session limitations- meaning internet and network allocation can be managed according to individual users, devices and programs, helping increase a system’s full potential. VoIP QoS is also supported, managing inbound and outbound packets as well as allowing users to view usage statistics.

The VigorFly210 has also been designed with the needs of small businesses and remote offices in mind. The device can be set up quickly and easily, allowing instant internet access when used with a 3G or 4G mobile connection to maintain business operations.

A VPN tunnel also provides greater security to business communication and corporate applications with communication is further enhanced by the prioritization of VoIP packets, guaranteeing voice call quality. Extensive management tools, a focus on business communication and competitive pricing make the VigorFly210 an excellent choice for both the home and small business users.

Some devices, such as the Vigor3200 and the Vigor3300 can use 4 WAN connections to create a much larger VPN trunk between two interconnected sites, as outlined below. In the diagram, two VPN trunks are established (one for each LAN subnet) and then combined into one large VPN trunk.

Routers supporting VPN load balancing are the Vigor2850, 2930, 2955, 3200, 3300 and the eagerly awaited Vigor3900 and Vigor2960 series routers.

Details on how to configure VPN load balance using the Vigor3200 is available from: http://www.draytek.com/user/SupportAppnotesDetail.php?ID=973
